The Zika Virus – Do We Really Need to Worry?

The pesky mosquito is notorious for spreading a whole lot of ailments. Be it dengue, malaria, elephantiasis, Japanese encephalitis, chikungunya or the latest Zika - they all come from the same source: mosquitoes. The Zika virus was first discovered way back in 1947 in the dense forests of Uganda and was only confined to African regions and Latin America.

Of late, this virus has spread it wings so considerably that the WHO has declared it a menace. The WHO stated that 4 million people are prone to get affected by the virus later this year 2016. The WHO also advises pregnant women not to travel to South American countries and Caribbean regions since these areas are rampant with the virus.

Which Mosquito spreads the Zika Virus?
The Aedes mosquito is responsible for spreading the Zika virus. The same species of mosquito is also accountable for spreading yellow fever, chikungunya, and dengue. It has the ability to thrive in very little quantities of water - even in a small bottle cap! The mosquito is contrary to other counterparts since it is not much active at night but attacks during the day.

Where Does the Zika Mosquito Live/Breed?
The Aedes mosquito can live in any quantity of water and can breed in the following areas:

1. Any source of water
2. Air conditioner ducts
3. Old tires lying outside
4. Flower pots with stagnant water
5. Unused water coolers
6. Dripping trays

The Ades mosquito can thrive in wet and warm weather conditions and can lay hundreds of eggs in a 2” bottle cap or even a smaller place.

The Spread and Its Prevention
The Zika virus spreads when an Aedes mosquito bites a healthy person after biting an infected individual. To evade this menace, experts recommend keeping the surroundings clean and getting rid of stagnant water round your home.

Other preventive measures are:
1. Liberal usage of mosquito repellants
2. Securing empty/unused flower pots around the house
3. Not allowing water to remain stagnant (in vessels, containers, etc.)
4. Wear protective clothing at all times (long sleeved apparel, socks, and pants)

How Zika Affects Infants & Pregnant Women?
The Zika virus is believed to promote microcephaly in the unborn babies of infected expecting women. Children suffering with microcephaly have abnormally small brains and heads and show signs of damage.

It was only towards the end of 2015 that doctors in North Brazil noticed several instances of infants suffering with microcephaly. The results are not only a small head, but loss of hearing and abnormal brain development too.

Any Deaths caused by Zika?
So far, Columbia is the only region that has reported three deaths (suspected to be caused by the Zika virus). While it is still unascertained that the losses are due to the virus, another case of predicament was reported in India. Fortunately, the victim in India was just a car with the same name manufactured by Tata Motors. The soon to be launched Zica (car) is now undergoing a name change and will be rebranded due to apparent reasons.

What are the Symptoms, Cure and Vaccine for Zika?
The symptoms usually are red eyes, joint pains, fever and rashes. People complaining of mild symptoms can be cured in a few days (at the most a week) and hospitalization is not mandatory. Adequate intake of fluids for preventing dehydration and administration of paracetamol or acetaminophen is sufficient for managing fevers. All medications must be taken after a physician’s prescription.

Indian scientists and research centers are preparing a treatment/vaccine for curing people from the Zika virus.

Even as the virus threat is real and increasing, of late, pregnant women who may have visited any affected countries of the Caribbean and South America and during their pregnancy must take extreme precaution. While the world still figures out a positive cure for the virus, we must remain alert and take preventive care at all times.

Bizzare Interview Questions! Be Aware

Big, popular companies like Google and Apple are known for lots of things — like the perks, the pay, and the culture.

But they're also notorious for asking bizarre interview questions.

Tomas Ondrejka explains in a recent blog post on Kickresume.com that employers tend to throw curveballs like "One a scale of one to 10, how weird are you?" to determine the job seeker's analytical thinking skills; to see how the candidate reacts to something they did not expect; and to figure out whether this person can think on their feet and outside the box.

"Your answer doesn't have to be especially brilliant, but it should be somehow creative," he writes. "Take your time to think about it, but don't end up staring into the wall for a few minutes. Try to highlight some of your strengths in your answer. Think of something that wouldn't be a standard answer to the question. Make yourself easy to remember! If you can't think of anything interesting, just say an honest answer. It is much better than saying nothing."

Here are some weird questions companies like Tesla, Virgin, and Amazon have asked job candidates — and some ideas for how to answer them:

Still Not Written to TRAI? Voice Your Opinion Till January 7th!

The concern for Net Neutrality continues while the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India accepts comments from concerned netizens. TRAI’s chairman RS Sharma made it clear that comments are still considered by concerned internet users to voice their thoughts about Internet Neutrality. Additionally, counter comments are now allowed till January 14th which earlier was set on January 7th.

More on TRAI’s Statements

Stakeholders, telecom operators and other associated collaborators were persistent to TRAI about considering netizens’ opinions which has lead to this decision.

“On the request of the stakeholders, the last date for receipt of written comments/views has been extended up to January 7 and counter comments, if any, up to January 14. It has also been decided that no request for any further extension of time for submission of comments/counter comments shall be entertained.” – TRAI.

Repercussion of Net Neutrality

Even as the document by TRAI does not mention the term ’net neutrality’ anywhere, it points out the suggestion of zero-rating platforms which have whipped up a huge debate on the topic across the nation. The TRAI headquarters received more than 1.65 million comments according to sources. The comments related to the Facebook Free Basics are about 1 million. An equal number of people oppose and endorse the issue.

In a nutshell, the net neutrality theory says that ISPs (internetservice providers) must not discriminate any applications or block content that streams via their networks.

As I have already mentioned in a previous article on net neutrality, the concept includes uniform access to all websites, abolishing the telecom-style licensing and doing away with the impression of free and paid websites. Moreover, saving the internet will lead to more employment opportunities, enhanced returns on investments and improved society dominion.

Internet Neutrality – What is the Buzz?

Save the internet! Save the internet! This mantra seems to exist as the most apprehensive syllable uttered by the world. The internet essentially was rolled out decades ago with regular alterations and betterment to the structure over the years.

So what exactly is net neutrality? Almost a couple of months ago, some service providers and government administrations treated some parts of the internet with discrimination. Net neutrality is the brawl to make all data available on the internet uniformly.

The Concept of Open Internet
The theory of net neutrality proposes all data on the World Wide Web must be treated equally and must remain accessible to internet users at all times. However, some public and private administrative sectors believe that certain data from the internet must come at a premium. ISPs, government agencies and telecom operators have entire control over the internet’s content and can control the costs, speed and availability of various websites.

Fanatics strongly oppose this discriminating move and have shown grave dislike for the actions.

In a nutshell, net neutrality comprises about:

  • All sites must remain uniformly accessible
  • Internet companies shall not entail telecom-style licensing
  • Preference of speeding up websites must not prevail
  • Free or paid websites must not prevail

Consequently, all users must have freedom to access websites without any obligation from government agencies, ISPs or telecom operators.

Hype in India about Net Neutrality
Telecom operators in India adhere to the guidelines laid by the TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) and are pressing to introduce new principles for the internet that may stake or freedom for privacy and preferences. If this intention bears fruit, our Internet Service Providers will choose which portals or apps we can visit and the costs for each site.

Website owners and application publishers will have to pay each ISP individually to make your work visible to the users on their network. For instance, the Airtel network may charge it customers for using WhatsApp, whereas the Hike Messenger would be free as it is a product from Airtel.

What’s More Important?
The surge in wireless broadband connections has lead to intense debate and differences in outlooks. All odds are bending in favor of the customer and independent ISP companies are now withdrawing their programs. The internet is finally free as before and people can use it accordingly. Several ISPs such as Aadishesh have shown grave concern about Net Neutrality and have initiated several states with internet connection.
The conflict with net neutrality is not what people should brood over; instead, the prime focus should remain with pan-India internet connectivity for all.
