SMS Returns for Vehicle Registration Details Again

With the number of car sales and registrations on the rise, the need for improved transparency is greater than ever. Previously, the government had introduced a service, wherein vehicle details could be acquired, simply by sending the registration number (via SMS) to a designated phone number. The service was discontinued, but is now active once again.

The service can prove to be useful in preventing fraud in second hand car sales and bring in more accountability among motorists. To use the service, all you have to do is SMS VAHAN <space> the vehicle's registration number (upper case letters with no spaces), and send it to 7738299899.

Details such as the vehicle owner's name, the car's model, fuel type, category (e.g. LMV), RC expiry date and motor vehicle tax validity will be received via SMS in around 1 minute.

Note - The service may not be active for all RTOs and certain vehicle registration numbers may not be in the database.

Probabilities

Users of this service think the querying mechanism should have safeguards to ensure that individual privacy is upheld. Like everything else related to government in the country, there just isn’t proper thought behind the policy.

Right now anyone can get the name of the owner of any vehicle on the road by a simple SMS. Whether the person enquiring is stalking someone in a car for any reason, they can get the owners name. Getting the address is just a short hop from there leading to disastrous consequences for someone a target of criminals.

There should be a two stage authentication to ensure that person querying is in possession of the vehicle - if the primary motive is to find out if registration etc details are real or fake. Before providing details, the chassis or engine numbers or maybe both should also be input to validate that the person making the query has physical possession of the vehicle.

Make in India! Freedom 251 Quadcore Smartphone 1GB RAM Launched For Rs. 251 ($3.8)

Ringing Bells is an Indian smartphone manufacturer which has struck the right note. It has launched an extremely inexpensive smartphone at just Rs.251/- which is roughly $3.66!

As expected, everyone (including me) was expecting substandard features on the phone, but all hell broke loose when the facts were revealed by the company.

Ringing Bells had quoted yesterday that the smartphone would cost less than Rs.500/- (approx $7) but the new sticker price is flabbergasting.

The smartphone “Freedom 251” has specifications which a normal smartphone would cost 20 times more in the market.

Here are the specs:
  • Processor - 1.3 GHz Quadcore
  • RAM - 1GB
  • Internal Memory - 8GB (expandable to 32GB)
  • Rear Camera - 3.2 megapixels autofocus
  • Front Camera - 0.3 megapixels
  • Battery - 1450 mAh
  • Operating System - Android Lollipop 5.1
  • Screen Size - 4 inches with qHD IPS display
  • Connectivity - 3G

Preinstalled Apps include Women Safety, Swacch Bharat, Fisherman, Farmer, Market, and more.

The company offers 1 year warranty which serves as icing on the cake! What makes me wonder is the manufacturing cost of this phone could be around 2000 to 3000 and how Ringing Bells is able to sell it at such a low price!

Probabilities
Since the company has remained tight lipped on pricing the phone so low, it is possible that they might have tie-ups with Government organizations and application developers.

Another possibility could be that the Indian Government could have arranged for subsidy and other application developing companies could have given some compensation for the pre-installed apps.
Even after all such steps the price is still very low.

I still have several doubts and all we can do is wait and watch if there is some catch. Other smartphone brands could certainly face annihilation if the product delivers what it promises.

If all claims are true, then Ringing Bells must be prepared to supply a huge anticipated demand for their Freedom 251 smartphone. It won’t be unusual to see a billion people carrying smartphones and that will be really a surge in the number of Indian netizens.

The Zika Virus – Do We Really Need to Worry?

The pesky mosquito is notorious for spreading a whole lot of ailments. Be it dengue, malaria, elephantiasis, Japanese encephalitis, chikungunya or the latest Zika - they all come from the same source: mosquitoes. The Zika virus was first discovered way back in 1947 in the dense forests of Uganda and was only confined to African regions and Latin America.

Of late, this virus has spread it wings so considerably that the WHO has declared it a menace. The WHO stated that 4 million people are prone to get affected by the virus later this year 2016. The WHO also advises pregnant women not to travel to South American countries and Caribbean regions since these areas are rampant with the virus.

Which Mosquito spreads the Zika Virus?
The Aedes mosquito is responsible for spreading the Zika virus. The same species of mosquito is also accountable for spreading yellow fever, chikungunya, and dengue. It has the ability to thrive in very little quantities of water - even in a small bottle cap! The mosquito is contrary to other counterparts since it is not much active at night but attacks during the day.

Where Does the Zika Mosquito Live/Breed?
The Aedes mosquito can live in any quantity of water and can breed in the following areas:

1. Any source of water
2. Air conditioner ducts
3. Old tires lying outside
4. Flower pots with stagnant water
5. Unused water coolers
6. Dripping trays

The Ades mosquito can thrive in wet and warm weather conditions and can lay hundreds of eggs in a 2” bottle cap or even a smaller place.

The Spread and Its Prevention
The Zika virus spreads when an Aedes mosquito bites a healthy person after biting an infected individual. To evade this menace, experts recommend keeping the surroundings clean and getting rid of stagnant water round your home.

Other preventive measures are:
1. Liberal usage of mosquito repellants
2. Securing empty/unused flower pots around the house
3. Not allowing water to remain stagnant (in vessels, containers, etc.)
4. Wear protective clothing at all times (long sleeved apparel, socks, and pants)

How Zika Affects Infants & Pregnant Women?
The Zika virus is believed to promote microcephaly in the unborn babies of infected expecting women. Children suffering with microcephaly have abnormally small brains and heads and show signs of damage.

It was only towards the end of 2015 that doctors in North Brazil noticed several instances of infants suffering with microcephaly. The results are not only a small head, but loss of hearing and abnormal brain development too.

Any Deaths caused by Zika?
So far, Columbia is the only region that has reported three deaths (suspected to be caused by the Zika virus). While it is still unascertained that the losses are due to the virus, another case of predicament was reported in India. Fortunately, the victim in India was just a car with the same name manufactured by Tata Motors. The soon to be launched Zica (car) is now undergoing a name change and will be rebranded due to apparent reasons.

What are the Symptoms, Cure and Vaccine for Zika?
The symptoms usually are red eyes, joint pains, fever and rashes. People complaining of mild symptoms can be cured in a few days (at the most a week) and hospitalization is not mandatory. Adequate intake of fluids for preventing dehydration and administration of paracetamol or acetaminophen is sufficient for managing fevers. All medications must be taken after a physician’s prescription.

Indian scientists and research centers are preparing a treatment/vaccine for curing people from the Zika virus.

Even as the virus threat is real and increasing, of late, pregnant women who may have visited any affected countries of the Caribbean and South America and during their pregnancy must take extreme precaution. While the world still figures out a positive cure for the virus, we must remain alert and take preventive care at all times.

Bizzare Interview Questions! Be Aware

Big, popular companies like Google and Apple are known for lots of things — like the perks, the pay, and the culture.

But they're also notorious for asking bizarre interview questions.

Tomas Ondrejka explains in a recent blog post on Kickresume.com that employers tend to throw curveballs like "One a scale of one to 10, how weird are you?" to determine the job seeker's analytical thinking skills; to see how the candidate reacts to something they did not expect; and to figure out whether this person can think on their feet and outside the box.

"Your answer doesn't have to be especially brilliant, but it should be somehow creative," he writes. "Take your time to think about it, but don't end up staring into the wall for a few minutes. Try to highlight some of your strengths in your answer. Think of something that wouldn't be a standard answer to the question. Make yourself easy to remember! If you can't think of anything interesting, just say an honest answer. It is much better than saying nothing."

Here are some weird questions companies like Tesla, Virgin, and Amazon have asked job candidates — and some ideas for how to answer them:
