SMS Returns for Vehicle Registration Details Again

With the number of car sales and registrations on the rise, the need for improved transparency is greater than ever. Previously, the government had introduced a service, wherein vehicle details could be acquired, simply by sending the registration number (via SMS) to a designated phone number. The service was discontinued, but is now active once again.

The service can prove to be useful in preventing fraud in second hand car sales and bring in more accountability among motorists. To use the service, all you have to do is SMS VAHAN <space> the vehicle's registration number (upper case letters with no spaces), and send it to 7738299899.

Details such as the vehicle owner's name, the car's model, fuel type, category (e.g. LMV), RC expiry date and motor vehicle tax validity will be received via SMS in around 1 minute.

Note - The service may not be active for all RTOs and certain vehicle registration numbers may not be in the database.

Probabilities

Users of this service think the querying mechanism should have safeguards to ensure that individual privacy is upheld. Like everything else related to government in the country, there just isn’t proper thought behind the policy.

Right now anyone can get the name of the owner of any vehicle on the road by a simple SMS. Whether the person enquiring is stalking someone in a car for any reason, they can get the owners name. Getting the address is just a short hop from there leading to disastrous consequences for someone a target of criminals.

There should be a two stage authentication to ensure that person querying is in possession of the vehicle - if the primary motive is to find out if registration etc details are real or fake. Before providing details, the chassis or engine numbers or maybe both should also be input to validate that the person making the query has physical possession of the vehicle.

Ringing Bells had quoted yesterday that the smartphone would cost less than Rs.500/- (approx $7) but the new sticker price is flabbergasting.

The smartphone “Freedom 251” has specifications which a normal smartphone would cost 20 times more in the market.

• Internal Memory - 8GB (expandable to 32GB)
• Rear Camera - 3.2 megapixels autofocus
• Front Camera - 0.3 megapixels

Preinstalled Apps include Women Safety, Swacch Bharat, Fisherman, Farmer, Market, and more.

The company offers 1 year warranty which serves as icing on the cake! What makes me wonder is the manufacturing cost of this phone could be around 2000 to 3000 and how Ringing Bells is able to sell it at such a low price!

Probabilities

Since the company has remained tight lipped on pricing the phone so low, it is possible that they might have tie-ups with Government organizations and application developers.

Another possibility could be that the Indian Government could have arranged for subsidy and other application developing companies could have given some compensation for the pre-installed apps.

Even after all such steps the price is still very low.

I still have several doubts and all we can do is wait and watch if there is some catch. Other smartphone brands could certainly face annihilation if the product delivers what it promises.

If all claims are true, then Ringing Bells must be prepared to supply a huge anticipated demand for their Freedom 251 smartphone. It won’t be unusual to see a billion people carrying smartphones and that will be really a surge in the number of Indian netizens.

The Zika Virus – Do We Really Need to Worry?

The pesky mosquito is notorious for spreading a whole lot of ailments. Be it dengue, malaria, elephantiasis, Japanese encephalitis, chikungunya or the latest Zika - they all come from the same source: mosquitoes. The Zika virus was first discovered way back in 1947 in the dense forests of Uganda and was only confined to African regions and Latin America.

So far, Columbia is the only region that has reported three deaths (suspected to be caused by the Zika virus). While it is still unascertained that the losses are due to the virus, another case of predicament was reported in India. Fortunately, the victim in India was just a car with the same name manufactured by Tata Motors. The soon to be launched Zica (car) is now undergoing a name change and will be rebranded due to apparent reasons.

What are the Symptoms, Cure and Vaccine for Zika?

The symptoms usually are red eyes, joint pains, fever and rashes. People complaining of mild symptoms can be cured in a few days (at the most a week) and hospitalization is not mandatory. Adequate intake of fluids for preventing dehydration and administration of paracetamol or acetaminophen is sufficient for managing fevers. All medications must be taken after a physician’s prescription.

Indian scientists and research centers are preparing a treatment/vaccine for curing people from the Zika virus.

Even as the virus threat is real and increasing, of late, pregnant women who may have visited any affected countries of the Caribbean and South America and during their pregnancy must take extreme precaution. While the world still figures out a positive cure for the virus, we must remain alert and take preventive care at all times.

Jabalpur as a Smart City: What Makes It Different?

A big round of applause for all the hard working men and women of Jabalpur! Certainly, it calls for celebrations as Jabalpur gets 7^th position to become a Smart City! Let’s get down to basics and start from the beginning about which towns are chosen as smart cities and what goes into making one.

The Asseveration by Venkiah Naidu

India’s Union Minister, Venkiah Naidu, announced the list of the first twenty smart cities on Thursday January 28, 2016.

"Today marks a historic landmark in annals of urban development as we get to know the first batch of 'Smart Cities," Naidu said.

Various parameters on which the decision was taken are smartness of proposals, citizen participation, result orientation, feasibility, etc. Let’s take a look at the cities:

1. Bhubaneshwar

2. Pune

3. Jaipur

4. Surat

5. Kochi

6. NDMC (New Delhi)

7. Ahmedabad

8. Jabalpur

9. Vizag

10. Solapur

11. Devangere

12. Indore

13. Coimbatore

14. Kakinada

15. Belgaum

16. Udaipur

17. Guwahati

18. Chennai

19. Ludhiana

20. Bhopal

The 20 smart cities stated above will receive funds primarily to initiate the development procedure. A total of 100 crores are to be allotted to each city over a period of five years for expansion. The mission period also includes another Rs 50,000 crore from central assistance.

What are the Areas for Development?

The cities will include development of basic infrastructure such as ascertained power and water supply, solid waste management and sanitation, effective public transport and mobility, e-governance, IT connectivity and citizen involvement. An overall number of 100 smart cities are distributed among the states and union territories.

What does the Official Handbook say?

The government website states several features for smart cities which are given below:

Promotion of Mixed Land Usage in Area-Based Improvement – This includes setting up of unplanned areas which contain compatible activities and land usage knitted with each other for better usage of land. By-laws of the states will facilitate a decent amount of flexibility in usage of land.

Appropriate housing facilities and inclusiveness – This feature incorporates proper housing facilities for the citizens.

Reduction of Overall Congestion – Creation of walk-able neighborhoods, smoother flow of traffic, reduction of depletion of resources, ensuring security, boosting local economy lowing air pollutions and several more factors are included. Improvement of road networks (pedestrian, cyclists, private & public transport) with essential administrative services is on the cards within cycling or walking distance.

Development & Preservation of Open Spaces –Recreational areas, parks and playgrounds will be developed upon to boost the life-quality of citizens, promotion of ecological balance and reduction of heat effects in areas is in the pipeline.

Development of Transportation – The Smart City initiative promotes an assortment of transportation modes such as TOD (Transit Oriented Development), last mile par transport and public transportation.

Overall pursuit of citizen-friendly governance and introduction of cost-effective online services – This will further give rise to transparency and accountability, lessen cost of services, increase of mobile usage, and reduce visits to municipal offices. E-groups will be formed for the benefit of people and will obtain feedback by constant monitoring of activities and programs.

City Identity – Based on economic activity, the smart city project will give a special identity to the region with context to local cuisine, dairy, textile, hosiery, furniture, sporting goods, arts & craft, health, education and more.

Betterment of Services & Infrastructure – Smart solutions will be applied to strategic areas for making them better if not at par with fully developed regions. Making regions less susceptible to natural disasters, supplying more affordable services and using fewer resources are some of the major attractions of this venture.

Still Not Written to TRAI? Voice Your Opinion Till January 7th!

The concern for Net Neutrality continues while the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India accepts comments from concerned netizens. TRAI’s chairman RS Sharma made it clear that comments are still considered by concerned internet users to voice their thoughts about Internet Neutrality. Additionally, counter comments are now allowed till January 14^th which earlier was set on January 7^th.

Stakeholders, telecom operators and other associated collaborators were persistent to TRAI about considering netizens’ opinions which has lead to this decision.

“On the request of the stakeholders, the last date for receipt of written comments/views has been extended up to January 7 and counter comments, if any, up to January 14. It has also been decided that no request for any further extension of time for submission of comments/counter comments shall be entertained.” – TRAI.

Repercussion of Net Neutrality

Even as the document by TRAI does not mention the term ’net neutrality’ anywhere, it points out the suggestion of zero-rating platforms which have whipped up a huge debate on the topic across the nation. The TRAI headquarters received more than 1.65 million comments according to sources. The comments related to the Facebook Free Basics are about 1 million. An equal number of people oppose and endorse the issue.

In a nutshell, the net neutrality theory says that ISPs (internetservice providers) must not discriminate any applications or block content that streams via their networks.

As I have already mentioned in a previous article on net neutrality, the concept includes uniform access to all websites, abolishing the telecom-style licensing and doing away with the impression of free and paid websites. Moreover, saving the internet will lead to more employment opportunities, enhanced returns on investments and improved society dominion.
